RV Roof Care 101: How to Keep Your Roof Clean and Leak-Free

The roof is the part of an RV most owners never see, and it is also where most water damage starts. A clean, well-kept roof lasts longer, keeps the sidewalls free of black streaks and makes it easier to spot worn sealant before it lets water in.

Know your roof type

Most RVs have one of three roof types, and each needs slightly different care:

  • Rubber (EPDM or TPO): the most common. Use a cleaner made for rubber roofs and avoid petroleum-based or citrus products, which can damage the membrane.
  • Fiberglass: durable and smooth. It can be washed like the sidewalls and benefits from wax or a protective coating.
  • Aluminum: found on some older and vintage units. Clean gently and watch for corrosion around seams.

How often to clean the roof

Plan on a full roof cleaning at least twice a year, and more often if you park under trees. Leaves, pine needles and sap hold moisture against the roof and stain the surface.

Inspect while you clean

A roof cleaning is the perfect time to look over the seams and fixtures. Check for:

  • Cracked, peeling or missing sealant around vents, skylights and the AC unit
  • Soft spots when you step near the edges
  • Tears, bubbles or lifting in the membrane
  • Debris clogging the gutters and drip rails

If you find damage, have it repaired by an RV service center before the next rain.

Stay safe up there

Not every RV roof is built to be walked on. Check your owner’s manual, use a sturdy ladder and spread your weight with a padded board if needed. If you are not comfortable on the roof, leave it to someone who is.
